It takes meteoric impacts of such a huge magnitude to create the conditions necessary for the formation of Tektites that there are only four places in the world where they are found.
When a large meteor strikes the Earth, the heat from the impact melts material from the Earth’s surface, turning it into a natural glass that can either be black or olive green (known as Moldavite). The most recent of these impacts happened one million years ago, so don’t count on the supply lasting forever.
