Oglala Lakota stone carving artist Delbert Charging Crow will share the Lakota fetish carving tradition that is designed to awaken the stone carver in you. In this two-day workshop, you will learn the process of selecting a stone, how to recognize the shape within the stone, the tools to use, and the carving techniques to bring it forth.

Each day begins with a Lakota prayer and song to help the participants get in touch with the spirits within the stone.

Chaparral Rockhounds presents an annual show held on the first weekend of October for the general public. Its purpose is to educate and inform the public about earth science and the world of geology. Members from Chaparral Rockhounds and surrounding clubs display a wide variety of the earth’s geological wonders. See a wide range of fossils, gems, rocks & minerals (some of which fluoresce in bright colors under ultraviolet light). Typically, the show has 4-6 dealers, a silent auction, wheel of fortune, over 100 exhibits, and field trips for the famous Pecos Valley diamonds and quartz clusters. In addition, members attend and exhibit at several other club shows in the region.

Hop on over with your little chicks to the Mama's Minerals Easter Egg Hunt at our Albuquerque location! Kids will find eggs filled with Mama's Minerals goodies - tumbled stones, colorful beads, million year old fossils and minerals. Children are welcome to bring their own baskets for collecting. Have your photo taken with The Easter Bunny, have your kids’ faces painted, learn about pet rabbit care with the New Mexico House Rabbit Society, and color at the coloring booth.

Egg hunt is open to children 12 and under and parent guardians must be present for children to participate.

NMSEF accepts the top exhibits from the six regional science fairs in the state. It is held each April on the campus of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro. Its objectives are to recognize and reward excellence in science, mathematics, and engineering projects carried out by junior high and high school students from throughout the state. Winners at the state level compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in a major city every May.
