Now that Spring has finally arrived and the weather is warming up, it's a good time to consider some outdoor adventures that you might want to plan. How about searching for a $2 million dollar buried treasure as an enticement to get you outdoors and exploring?

The lure of outdoor adventure and the "thrill of the chase" is precisely what Santa Fe art dealer Forrest Fenn had in mind when he stashed a chest full of gold nuggets, antique gold coins, pre-Columbian gold animal figures, diamonds, emeralds, rubies and jewelry in a secret spot somewhere in the southwestern United States, and then published a poem in his memoir with nine clues to finding the treasure's location.

In his autobiography, The Thrill of the Chase, Fenn describes the adventures he's experienced over seven decades of searching for rare artifacts in locations around the globe. It's the joy of exploring the outdoors and the intrinsic rewards it brings that he really hopes to inspire others to find, by announcing his hidden treasure. In his mind, in the larger scheme of things, the treasure itself is secondary.

In a recent interview with NBC's TODAY Show, Fenn said that he believes too many Americans spend too much time in sedentary activities such as playing video games and watching television. He hopes that the hunt for his treasure will encourage many to get outside and explore the outdoors. "Get your kids out in the countryside, take them fishing and get them away from their little hand-held machines," he told TODAY.

Fenn was inspired to create his treasure hunt by a close brush with his own mortality. In 1988, when he was diagnosed with advanced kidney cancer, he began considering his own legacy and how he might inspire others to find the same enjoyment of adventure in their own lives. (Ironically, his cancer has since gone into remission.) He began collecting items to place in the treasure chest, and spent years working on his memoir and the poem of clues. When he considered the treasure chest complete and he felt strong enough to carry its 42 pound weight, he buried it in his secret spot.

Since making his treasure hunt public, Fenn has attracted an international following and thousands of email inquiries, many asking for additional clues. He generally fends off these requests by pointing out that all the clues necessary to finding the treasure are contained in his poem.

The general consensus among treasure hunters is that it's hidden somewhere in New Mexico. In a March 1 interview with NBC's TODAY Show, Fenn did reveal that "The treasure is hidden higher than 5,000 feet above sea level." Considering that the average elevation in New Mexico is 5,700 feet, it's not much of a clue; perhaps best to stick to the poem and get out there and start looking for yourself.

As I have gone alone in there
And with my treasures bold,
I can keep my secret where,
And hint of riches new and old.

Begin it where warm waters halt
And take it in the canyon down,
Not far, but too far to walk.
Put in below the home of Brown.

From there it's no place for the meek,
The end is ever drawing nigh;
There'll be no paddle up your creek,
Just heavy loads and water high.

If you've been wise and found the blaze,
Look quickly down, your quest to cease,
But tarry scant with marvel gaze,
Just take the chest and go in peace.

So why is it that I must go
And leave my trove for all to seek?
The answer I already know,
I've done it tired, and now I'm weak.

So hear me all and listen good,
Your effort will be worth the cold.
If you are brave and in the wood
I give you title to the gold.

The Thrill of the Chase is available only from Collected Works Bookstore in Santa Fe.

On April 15, 1912, the world’s largest ship sank 963 miles northeast of New York City after colliding with an iceberg. Most people, young and old, know of this ship -– Titanic, the ship of dreams, the ship that regretfully came to a tragic end.

However, from this tragedy emerged heartfelt stories of the passengers that were on the ship that fateful morning when Titanic sank. Details of the ship’s demise became worldwide news and still, to this day, the history of Titanic lives on.

And now, visitors to the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science will have the opportunity to learn of the compelling human stories of those passengers on board through viewing Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, featuring authentic artifacts recovered from the wreck site of the world’s most famous sunken ocean liner. Visitors can experience accurate recreations of the ship’s interior and can even experience the true nature of an iceberg.

On March 23, 2013, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition will make its New Mexico debut. The blockbuster exhibition, from Premier Exhibitions out of Atlanta, GA, seen by more than 25 million people worldwide, will be on exhibit at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science through October 27, 2013.

About the Exhibit

Just over a century after the ship’s sinking, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition showcases 125 artifacts recovered from the wreck site, taking the visitor on a journey back in time through the life of Titanic, paying tribute to the passengers that both perished in and survived the tragedy.

The story of Titanic is a good fit for the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. "The science and engineering that went into the ship’s construction, the recovery of artifacts from the deep ocean floor, and the powers of nature that led to the tragedy all have a direct link to the Museum’s role of supporting science learning for the citizens of New Mexico. And the very human story of the Titanic tragedy is something that draws individuals who want to experience what it was like to be aboard that ship on that cold April night 101 years ago," said Charles Walter, Executive Director of the Museum.

Admission

Admission to the exhibit is $18.00 for adults, $15.00 for seniors, and $11.00 for children. A special discount is offered for museum members at $6.00 per person. Advance tickets will go on sale online via an official announcement from the Museum in early March.

About RMS Titanic, Inc.

RMS Titanic, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Premier Exhibitions, Inc., is the only company permitted by law to recover objects from the wreck site of Titanic. The Company was granted Salvor-in-possession rights to the wreck site of Titanic by a United States federal court in 1994, and has conducted eight research and recovery expeditions to Titanic’s debris field and recovered more than 5,500 artifacts.

RMS Titanic, Inc. has a singular purpose: to faithfully and respectfully preserve the memory of Titanic and of all who sailed with her.

Premier Exhibitions, Inc. is a major provider of museum-quality touring exhibitions throughout the world.

About the Museum

The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science preserves and interprets the distinctive natural and scientific heritage of our state through extraordinary collections, research, exhibits and programs designed to ignite a passion for lifelong learning.
