Mineralogy: Celestite (strontium sulfate) is often white or gray, but the sky-blue variety is the most highly desired amongst mineral collectors. It is formed when nodules of gypsum or anhydrite (both calcium sulfate minerals) are exposed to strontium-rich solutions which dissolve existing calcium and cause precipitation of strontium sulfate crystals.
